On May 5, 2025, at approximately 3:37 a.m., deputies from the Augusta County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a male refusing to leave the Sheetz convenience store in Fishersville. Upon arrival, they identified the individual as 39-year-old Stefan R. Gerencser of Staunton. After speaking with deputies, Gerencser agreed to leave the premises without incident. Gerencser was intoxicated, declined medical treatment and refused transportation to the hospital by rescue personnel. He later agreed to be transported to Augusta Health by deputies; however, upon arrival, he refused to remain at the hospital for treatment. 5:18 a.m., Gerencser was arrested for public intoxication. During the arrest, he initially refused to enter the Sheriff's Office vehicle and assaulted a deputy. A brief struggle ensued before the deputy and Augusta Health Security were able to secure him in the vehicle. At 5:45 a.m., the deputy arrived at Middle River Regional Jail. When the deputy attempted to remove Gerencser from the vehicle, he discovered that Gerencser was unresponsive and not breathing. Jail staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, but despite their efforts, they were unsuccessful. The incident has been turned over to the Virginia State Police for investigation, and no further details have been released at this time.

At approximately 12:09 a.m. on April 27, 2025, a Virginia State Police trooper observed a motorcycle traveling over 100 mph on eastbound I-66 near Nutley Street in Fairfax County. The trooper initiated a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist drove away. Police escalated a chase to unknown speeds and stated that the trooper called off the chase “due to safety reasons,” not otherwise specified. Shortly thereafter, the fleeing motorcycle crashed into rear passenger side of an SUV, caught on fire which the trooper and then responding firefighters extinguished. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the crash site. The SUV driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The incident remains under investigation.

On April 25, 2025, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Norfolk Police officers responded to a report of a disorderly person in the 800 block of East Little Creek Road. The individual, identified as 37-year-old Charlene Carey-Chavez, had reportedly been involved in an assault the previous day and had returned to the area.
Officers located Carey-Chavez in the 7600 block of Sewells Point Road. Upon contact, she produced a weapon and failed to comply with officers' commands to drop it. Officers discharged their service weapons, striking Carey-Chavez and inflicting life-threatening injuries. She was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
As a result of the investigation, Carey-Chavez was charged with assault and battery, grand larceny, and brandishing a firearm. She remains hospitalized and will be taken to Norfolk City Jail upon her release. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

On April 23, 2025, Fairfax County police conducted a traffic stop near the 4000 block of Majestic Lane in the Fair Oaks area. Officers pulled over 36-year-old Jamal Wali for speeding and expired plates. Wali reportedly became hostile, refused to identify himself, and informed police he was armed. As officers commanded him to stop reaching for his weapon, Wali opened fire, shooting two officers in the arms. A third officer opened fire and shot Wali. Wali died at the scene. On April 14, 2025, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call regarding a man with a knife threatening to kill himself at a residence in the 6000 block of Rawley Pike. Deputies attempted to communicate with the man, but he refused to engage. The man allegedly moved, approaching the deputies. Non-lethal weapons were fired. A deputy then fired his service weapon, striking the man once. Emergency assistance was provided, and the man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sam Zu Yung, 32, was found unresponsive in his single cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on March 31, 2025, around 6:17 p.m. Yung was pronounced deceased at 6:41 p.m. He had been detained since February 16, 2025, facing charges related to firearm offenses, statutory burglary, and property destruction. An off-duty federal law enforcement officer, who was exiting the store, engaged Barbour with their personal weapon, fatally shooting him at the scene. The officer was uninjured. Investigators determined that Barbour had no prior affiliation with either victim or the location. He fired 28 rounds within 20 seconds. Barbour had no criminal history but had prior non-violent contacts with law enforcement, including mental health-related interactions in December 2024 and January 2025.

On October 30, 2024, Andy Ernesto Espinoza Garay, 26, was fatally shot by Virginia State Police after a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 95. Police brought SWAT and escalated a standoff during which time the man died from suicide under police. Police operated drones and found him dead. Aaron Dusinberre was sitting on a bench at 500 block of Crown Court in Newport News. Police were called because someone felt that they saw a gun in his lap. Police arrived and engaged in a confrontation with him and alleged that he was suicidal. It is unknown how they arrived at this claim. Police shot and killed him, claiming he refused to drop his weapon. The object was an orange–tipped Airsoft gun and not a weapon. Police confirmed that it had an orange tip and it is unclear why they did not recognize it not to be a weapon by this marker.

Diamond Elizabeth Brooks, a 26-year-old woman from Newport News, Virginia, died following a high-speed police chase. Virginia State Police attempted to stop Brooks' Chrysler 300 for speeding on Interstate 64. She drove away from the traffic stop and exited onto Hampton Roads Center Parkway. Police escalated a chase. At the intersection of Big Bethel Road, she lost control of her vehicle while attempting a turn and crashed into a traffic light pole. She was later identified as the driver, and the Virginia State Police are investigating the event. The Hampton Commonwealth Attorney also assisted with the investigation​.

Fairfax County Police responded to a request by a healthcare provider to perform a wellness check on a 33-year-old female. Police arrived and she opened the door with a knife, allegedly cutting the officer’s face. Police state that she refused to drop the knife and explaining why they shot her, they pointed out that she was 6 foot 5 and 330 pounds which caused the officer to shoot and kill her.

Paige County deputies were alerted by another law-enforcement agencies that a man in mental health crisis who may be suicidal was driving in their direction. Paige County deputies located him and escalated a chase. The vehicle stopped abruptly. Police used drones and discovered that the man had died from suicide under police duress during the chase.

Roanoke PD responded to a “shots fired” call and arrived at the Econo Lodge, where they allegedly heard shots being fired. Police found a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds and Wayne Hubert Shortt was locked into a room.. Police called SWAT and escalated a standoff. After sometime of firing gas into the home, police made forcible entry and found a man dead from suicide under police duress.

Khasi Nicole Chrisley was allegedly driving a stolen car and was spotted by Radford PD. She refused a traffic stop and police escalated a high-speed chase that ended when she crashed into another vehicle and died.
