On 11/17/2025 officers attempted a traffic stop on a Nissan Altima. The driver refused to stop and police escalated a chase. The vehicle left the roadway on Route 20, struck a ditch, struck a mailbox and two trees, became airborne and struck another mailbox. The driver died at the scene.

The vehicle was located and as officers approached, 45-year-old William Griffin allegedly fired a shot from inside the vehicle. Officers returned fire, and Griffin was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

On 10/09/2025, Chesterfield County Police responded to reports of a domestic incident involving a weapon. Officers located the suspect traveling on Hull Street Road and attempted a traffic stop, but he refused to stop. On 09/25/2025 at about 9:40 p.m., an officer pulled over a Toyota Corolla on the shoulder of I-395. A Honda CRV traveling northbound at high speed collided with the police vehicle. The driver of the CRV was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The officer and a person from the Corolla sustained minor injuries.

On 09/23/2025, 62-year-old Trina Jones of Alexandria was first struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Richmond Highway at Belford Drive in Hybla Valley. On August 29, 2025, Virginia State Police pursued 20-year-old Christian Robert Markus Snyder after he was seen riding a motorcycle at speeds over 140 miles per hour on Interstate 264 West. The driver fled on foot, and under unclear circumstances, troopers and deputies opened fire, killing him. On 08/04/2025, a Virginia State Police trooper from Halifax County attempted to stop a Kia SUV for speeding. Officers located Harrison Charles Deppe sitting in a vehicle near Potomac Mills Circle. After hours of negotiations failed, Deppe exited the vehicle armed not with a firearm, but a crossbow. He then ran toward the busy Potomac Mills Mall outlet. On June 25, 2025, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Botetourt County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call from Liam Gerald McCaul, who stated he had killed his father, Hugh Gerald McCaul, inside their home on High Ridge Circle. Deputies arrived and found McCaul outside with a handgun. Crisis negotiators attempted to engage him after he reportedly disconnected communication. Deputies moved in, and McCaul allegedly pointed the weapon at them. In response, deputies fired and killed him. Inside the residence, deputies discovered the elder McCaul deceased from an apparent homicide. The Virginia State Police have assumed command of the investigation.

Upon arrival, troopers encountered a man in a vehicle who then fled, initiating a pursuit. The chase continued until the driver, identified as 39-year-old Derek C. Holland of Cary, North Carolina, crashed in an open field near Highway 903.
After the crash, Holland exited the vehicle reportedly holding a knife. A trooper opened fire, striking him. Holland was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation and will be reviewed by the Mecklenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
Family described Holland as a “kind-hearted and fiercely loyal” man who loved his two children deeply. On 02/28/2025, Harold "Jason" Chamberlain, 61, was fatally shot by off-duty FBI Agent Benjamin Spinale during a neighborhood altercation in the Stratford Place subdivision of Stafford County, Virginia. The incident began when Spinale confronted a teenager riding a dirt bike, leading to a confrontation involving the teen's family and law enforcement. Chamberlain, a neighbor, intervened to assist officers and was shot by Spinale. Spinale has been indicted on four misdemeanor charges for brandishing a firearm related to this and other incidents. The investigation into Chamberlain's death is ongoing.

On the night of February 21, 2025, Officers Reese and Girvin conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired plates in Virginia Beach. The driver, identified as John McCoy III, became uncooperative and, during a physical altercation, produced a firearm and shot both officers. Officer Reese was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, and Officer Girvin succumbed to his injuries later that morning. On February 17, 2025, at approximately 1:35 PM, Justin M. Barbour, 28, of Crozet, Virginia, opened fire in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter grocery store located at 545 Radford Lane. Barbour first shot 43-year-old Peter L. Martin, who was exiting the store, and then 68-year-old Diane G. Spangler, who was seated in her car. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Spangler was transported to UVA Medical Center in critical condition and later succumbed to her injuries. An off-duty federal law enforcement officer, who was exiting the store, engaged Barbour with their personal weapon, fatally shooting him at the scene. The officer was uninjured. Investigators determined that Barbour had no prior affiliation with either victim or the location. He fired 28 rounds within 20 seconds. Barbour had no criminal history but had prior non-violent contacts with law enforcement, including mental health-related interactions in December 2024 and January 2025.
