A male passenger in the fleeing vehicle died at the crash site. The driver fled on foot but was arrested. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Around 2:57 a.m., a Marin County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a driver for reckless driving in San Rafael. The driver refused to stop. Police escalated a pursuit that lasted approximately two minutes. The man crashed into a tree at the intersection of Andersen Drive and Bellam Boulevard, was ejected from the vehicle, and died at the scene. The California Highway Patrol is conducting an independent investigation. His identity has not been released.

Ontario police attempted to stop a stolen silver Audi. The driver refused to stop. Officers escalated a chase from Ontario into Chino. Clarissa Cano, a 27-year-old mother of a 5-year-old daughter, had just left home to visit her grandmother when the driver ran a red light and slammed into her red car at high speed, pushing both vehicles through a wall. Cano was killed in the crash. She had been caring for her younger siblings after the death of their mother. Her death occurred on her birthday. The driver was arrested and charged with multiple crimes including vehicular manslaughter.

On March 26, 2025, a 59-year-old man was shot and killed by two San Diego Police SWAT officers in the Scripps Ranch area after reportedly threatening multiple people with a firearm. On March 26, 2025, San Diego Police responded to reports of a man pointing a gun at pest control and construction workers in the Scripps Ranch neighborhood. Officers arrived at the 11600 block of Angelique Street and ordered the man to drop his weapon. The 59-year-old male allegedly advanced toward officers while holding a semi-automatic pistol. On March 26, 2025, multiple law enforcement agencies executed a drug-related search warrant at a home on Kestrel Court in Olivehurst. During the operation, a man inside the residence exchanged gunfire with officers. Marysville Police Officer Osmar Rodarte was shot and later died at a hospital. Officers returned fire and killed the man inside the home. Rodarte was a two-year veteran of the department and a U.S. Army veteran. The Yuba County and Sutter County District Attorney’s Offices are investigating.

On March 24, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., custody deputies at the Northern Branch Jail in Santa Maria discovered 57-year-old inmate Caprice Fowler unresponsive in her four-person cell. Despite life-saving efforts, Fowler was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined that she died of acute peritonitis due to a ruptured gastric ulcer, and her death was classified as natural causes. Fowler had been in custody since March 19, 2025, following her arrest on a felony no-bail warrant related to firearm and ammunition possession charges, and was subsequently charged with felony animal cruelty on March 21, 2025. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is conducting an administrative investigation and will provide information to the Santa Barbara County Grand Jury for independent review.

Around 7:40 a.m. on March 23, 2025, a juvenile called 911 reporting her mother was being assaulted and kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, who was armed. The man forced the woman into a Mercedes sedan and drove away from an apartment complex on Oro Vista Road. Officers from the San Diego Police Department pursued the vehicle and deployed spike strips on Tocayo Avenue. After the vehicle stopped, the woman escaped. The man then shot and killed himself in the vehicle as police surrounded the scene.

On March 23, 2025, around 2:00 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers pursued a stolen vehicle traveling over 100 miles per hour on Highway 4 in Pittsburg. The driver exited at Railroad Avenue and crashed into a blue SUV that was not involved in the chase. Villamalia Polina Tu'ipulotu, 23, was a passenger in the SUV and died in the collision. On March 17, 2025, 28-year-old Robert "Bob" Halmayr of Glen Ellen was driving a silver Toyota Camry northbound on Farmer’s Lane in Santa Rosa when he was struck by a gray Nissan Maxima driven by Aaron Rodriguez Hernandez, 21. Hernandez was being monitored by police who had earlier observed him speeding. Although police stated they did not maintain continuous visual contact and were not in a position to conduct a stop, they saw the Maxima again shortly before the crash. The collision occurred at Montgomery Drive and Farmer’s Lane, pushing both vehicles into a nearby parking lot. Halmayr was pronounced dead at the scene. Hernandez was arrested and faces charges including vehicular manslaughter, DUI drugs with injury, and violation of probation.

On March 15, 2025, at approximately 7:07 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 101 near Ralph Lane in Prunedale. The driver, 42-year-old James Combs of Salinas, had crashed his car into a guardrail. Upon arrival, a CHP officer encountered Combs, who allegedly produced a pocket knife with a 4-inch blade. On March 14, 2025, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near Imperial Highway and Broadway in South Los Angeles after observing a vehicle being driven erratically. Officers ordered the driver, 35-year-old Mario Sanchez, to lower his windows and place his hands outside the vehicle. Sanchez reportedly exited the vehicle, removed a dark object from his waistband area, and quickly pointed it at the officers. Believing the object to be a weapon, officers opened fire, striking Sanchez. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The object Sanchez pointed at the officers was later determined to be a cellphone. His family states that he had been shot more than 30 times.

Family's Response:
Following the incident, Sanchez's family and community members gathered outside the Southeast Los Angeles Police Department Station to protest the shooting, holding signs that read "A cellphone is not a gun" and "Justice for Mario Sanchez." His sister, Evelyn Sanchez, stated that her brother had texted her at 10:20 p.m., informing her he had been pulled over by the LAPD, and was killed within minutes of that message. She described Mario as a forklift driver and father of two, demanding accountability for the officers involved.

Investigation:
The California Department of Justice is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, as mandated by AB 1506, which requires such reviews when an unarmed civilian is killed by law enforcement.

On March 8, 2025, at approximately 6:49 p.m., Ariona "Ari" Jackson, 33, of Victorville, was involved in an alleged retail shoplifting incident at the Tractor Supply store in Apple Valley, California. After store personnel recovered the items, Jackson left on foot southbound across Bear Valley Road near Savage Lane, running across all lanes of traffic. She was struck by a Mazda 6 sedan driven by a 20-year-old woman from Apple Valley. Emergency responders transported Jackson to a local hospital, and she was later airlifted to a trauma center, where she died from her injuries. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the incident.

Drone footage provided images of the man and his vehicle. On February 28, 2025, Glendora Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description. Upon arrival of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, Castellon fled, leading to a brief pursuit.After stopping, Castellon appeared to manipulate an object inside the car before raising a handgun and shooting himself. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Forensic analysis confirmed that the same firearm was used in both the Nevada and California incidents.

On 02/27/2025, California Highway Patrol officers initiated a pursuit of a man driving a van in Winnetka, California. The chase began around 2:30 a.m. near 7236 Sunnybrae Avenue. On February 27, 2025, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Temple Station served a search warrant at a residence in the 8700 block of Scott Street in Rosemead, California. On February 24, 2025, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle. The driver turned off the lights and drove northbound on Hillcroft Avenue. Police escalated a chase at 80 miles an hour that lasted approximately two minutes when the driver lost control and struck a tree in the 1400 block of South Voss Road. The vehicle caught fire upon impact. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Houston Fire Department. The Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes and Internal Affairs Divisions are investigating the incident, which is being treated as an in-custody death. The identity of the deceased has not been released.

On 02/24/2025, at approximately 12:41 a.m., a deputy from the Victorville Sheriff's Station responded to a disturbance call at a Chevron gas station at 12905 Hesperia Road. Upon arrival, the deputy encountered Roman Huerta, a local unhoused man who was allegedly under the influence of a controlled substance and causing a disturbance. During the encounter, Huerta pushed the deputy and attempted to run. The deputy escalated to a chase, and a Taser was deployed to subdue Huerta. He was taken into custody but remained combative in the patrol vehicle. He was transported to Victor Valley Global Medical Center for a pre-booking medical evaluation, where he remained uncooperative. Huerta became unresponsive at the hospital and was pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
