On 11/08/2025, deputies from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office pursued a vehicle driven by 51-year-old Steven Shawn Trafford into Greene County, Missouri. The vehicle crashed near the intersection of U.S. 65 and Evans Road, overturned, and caught fire. While officers issued commands, a single gunshot was heard from inside the wreckage. Deputies and a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper extracted Trafford, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Greene County Sheriff’s Critical Incident Team is investigating.

On 11/07/2025, law-enforcement officers from the U.S. Marshals Service, assisted by deputies of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, attempted to serve a warrant on Ricardo Kirk at a residence on Shell Oil Road in Brandon, Mississippi. The warrant was issued for Kirk by the Omaha Police Department in relation to aggravated assault with a firearm. Upon arrival just after 5:40 p.m., the suspect fired at officers from inside the home and barricaded himself. After negotiations and additional rounds of gunfire, deputies heard a single gunshot from within the home around 8:45 p.m. They later breached the door and found Kirk with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident.

Deputies encountered the man, who reportedly charged at them while armed. Officers opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry and will submit its findings to the Attorney General’s Office.

Shortly after midnight, DeSoto County deputies responded to a noise complaint at a residence on Bankston Road in Nesbit. Police said they were informed that someone in the crowd had fired a gun. Deputies searched the area and located 18-year-old Rylee James Westmoreland, who reportedly ran into a wooded area. When he emerged, police said he pointed a handgun at deputies, and officers opened fire, killing him. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On 10/12/2025, around 1:18 a.m., deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Michael Lyons of Vicksburg in connection with a missing 15-year-old girl. Lyons refused to stop. Police escalated a chase along Highway 43 near Monticello, where his vehicle left the roadway and overturned north of East Smith Ferry Road. Lyons was pronounced dead at the scene. The 15-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

On September 15, 2025, deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic violence call in Pearlington. The incident involved a report of a person being held captive with handcuffs near Old Gainesville Road and Highway 604. Deputies confronted 51-year-old Willie Carroll, who displayed a weapon. Deputies opened fire, striking and killing Carroll.

On 08/20/2025 after midnight, Byram Police pursued a stolen 2019 Chevrolet Camaro into Jackson. The chase ended when the car crashed at Elton Road and East Frontage Road and caught fire. The driver was trapped inside and died at the scene. Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers recovered the body, which was sent to the state crime lab in Pearl for identification.

On 08/05/2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., police responded to a residence on Cole Thomas Road in McComb. Off-duty McComb Police Sergeant Jason Blake was found dead from gunshot wounds along with a second man, identified as Clay Paulk. A woman identified as Nicki Wilson was found with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries and transported to a hospital. Police stated Paulk forced entry into the home, shot Blake and Wilson with a shotgun, then shot himself with a handgun. The Pike County Criminal Investigations Division is investigating.

On 07/29/2025, Hinds County deputies attempted to serve a mental health-related warrant on Richard Barry Lowery. Lowery fled in his vehicle, leading officers on a 10–15 mile chase before he crashed through a gate and forced entry into a residence on Bill Downing Road in Raymond. He barricaded himself inside while armed. The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team established a perimeter, deployed armored vehicles, and attempted negotiations by phone and loudspeaker. SWAT introduced chemical agents into the home through windows. After more than six hours with no surrender, officers entered and discovered Lowery dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. On 06/14/2025 at approximately 12:41 a.m., Ocean Springs Police Department officers attempted a traffic stop on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle near Bowen Avenue. The driver, Joseph Jereidini, 26, did not stop, and officers escalated a chase north on Cox Avenue into unincorporated Jackson County. The pursuit continued as Jereidini entered Bienville Boulevard (Highway 90), where he collided with a westbound silver Chrysler 300 at the intersection with Cox Avenue. Jereidini was transported to Ocean Springs Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver and passenger of the Chrysler 300 were hospitalized at USA Medical Center in Mobile. Mississippi Highway Patrol is handling the crash reconstruction.

On 06/11/2025, deputies arrived at a property near Turan Road and Highway 67 in Saucier, Mississippi, to serve a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation for 40-year-old Jason Simmons. According to law enforcement, Simmons allegedly fired a gun at arriving officers and then barricaded himself inside a shed on the property. A SWAT standoff lasting about four hours followed, during which negotiators attempted to make contact. Around 10:30 p.m., Simmons reportedly opened fire again, and officers returned fire, killing him at the scene. Family members stated that Simmons suffered from delusions and had recently been experiencing a mental health crisis.

On 05/11/2025, Natchez Police Department officers attempted to serve a felony warrant for attempted murder on Phillip Stokes Jr., who was wanted in connection with a shooting that injured a woman on Lafayette Street on 05/09/2025.Upon locating Stokes near the old Natchez Visitor Center on South Canal Road, officers approached his vehicle and instructed him to exit. Stokes exited the vehicle and opened fire on the officers. Officers opened fire, critically injuring Stokes. He was transported to Merit Health Natchez and later transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he was pronounced dead on 05/16/2025. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the shooting.

On April 24, 2025, Sunflower County deputies pursued three suspects connected to a triple homicide in Drew, Mississippi. During a foot pursuit in Rome, one Black male suspect shot himself while being pursued. He was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he was later pronounced dead.

On April 24, 2025, Richland police conducted a traffic stop on a recreational vehicle (RV) traveling along U.S. Highway 49. During the stop, the driver, 77-year-old Abdullah Chetin of Ocala, Florida, allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting at officers. An exchange of gunfire ensued, and Chetin barricaded himself inside the RV. After a standoff, additional gunfire was exchanged, resulting in Chetin being fatally shot. No officers were injured during the shooting; however, an officer responding to the scene was involved in a separate traffic accident and received medical attention at a local hospital. On April 9, 2025, Timothy Byrd was found dead at his home off Dover Road in Yazoo County, Mississippi. Initial reports suggested a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, investigators identified discrepancies in the account provided by James Durwood Winstead, a former Yazoo City police chief present at the scene. Further investigation uncovered evidence of foul play. On April 11, 2025, Winstead was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Byrd's death.

Upon arrival, they found a woman with non-life-threatening injuries, who was transported to a hospital for treatment. Deputies engaged in communication with a male subject at the scene for about 20 minutes before he died from a self-inflicted wound. The man's identity has not been disclosed. On 03/22/2025, at approximately 7:16 p.m., a mass shooting occurred at the intersection of Pearl Street and Lamar Street in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, following Hal's St. Paddy's Parade. Among the victims, 21-year-old Cortez Jerome George was shot and killed by multiple gunshots. The investigation led to the arrest of an off-duty University of Mississippi Medical Center Police Department officer, Michael McLeod, who was off duty at the time of the incident. Arrested with him was his brother, Marquavius McLeod, who had also participated in the shooting.

On March 27, 2025 and charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault. Following his arrest, McLeod was terminated from his position at UMMC PD. As of the latest available information, he is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond, Mississippi, and has been denied bond.

On November 14, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., McComb Police Department officers responded to reports of a Dodge Charger near the 200 block of 25th Street in McComb, Mississippi. Upon arrival, two young men exited the vehicle. One of them, identified as 16-year-old Jamorion Seiber, allegedly held a weapon. Officers opened fire, fatally shooting Seiber.
