On 11/18/2025, police responded to a reported shooting at a Queens-Brooklyn border apartment building in the Brownsville neighborhood. A neighbor and another occupant were found dead. Officers arrived, and during clearance of the building a man opened fire and struck an officer in the face. The officer returned fire, and the man barricaded himself in an apartment. Police used a drone and later entered the apartment and found the man dead from a gunshot wound, with a firearm nearby.

On 11/17/2025, two New York State Police troopers were conducting a traffic stop on Route 23 with emergency lights activated. Sharon L. Torres was driving a Kia westbound when her vehicle left the roadway and struck the rear of the parked patrol car, which then hit the stopped Subaru involved in the traffic stop. Both troopers were injured. Torres was unresponsive when officers reached her and she died at the scene.

On 11/13/2025 a man fled from a shoplifting incident at an Aldi store in Gates. He ran onto Interstate 390 where he was struck and killed by a vehicle. The agency and involved officers are investigating the circumstances.

On 11/13/2025 just before 7 p.m., officers with the NYPD encountered a 20-year-old man on the Upper East Side after reports that he pointed a firearm at a person in an apartment building elevator and at a deli worker. He then threatened to shoot up a hospital. He fired at officers and a shootout followed. He was shot by officers, transported to hospital, and pronounced dead.

On 09/28/2025, troopers and a Chemung County deputy responded to a residence on Rotary Road where 18-year-old Nathan J. Novakowski was threatening a woman with scissors. A trooper repeatedly ordered Novakowski to drop the weapon in an effort to de-escalate. Novakowski became agitated and attempted to stab the woman. The trooper opened fire, striking him fatally. The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Greater Valley Ambulance. On 09/25/2025, New York State Police pursued a 2010 Jeep Liberty driven by 44-year-old Joseph Damico on Route 5 in Dunkirk. On Sunday morning, July 13, 2025, at approximately 8:48 a.m., Suffolk County Police officers responded to reports of a stabbing behind a commercial strip mall at 2505 Middle Country Road in Centereach, New York. On June 18, 2025 around 3:30 p.m., Chautauqua County deputies responded to a reported domestic dispute at a residence on Mina French Creek Road. Deputies encountered Mark W. Bemis, 66, holding a shotgun outside the home. He fired a round that struck a deputy in the hand. Deputies then opened fire and struck Bemis. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured deputy was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The New York Attorney General’s Office and District Attorney’s Forensic Identification Team are investigating. Deputies involved were wearing body cameras, which were active at the time.

On 06/05/2025, officers from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to a 911 call at 8 Fair Oaks Drive regarding a reported assault involving 36-year-old Brian C. Czornyj. According to initial reports, Czornyj had been engaged in a mental health crisis and was allegedly attacking a Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team member with a samurai sword. Upon arrival, officers observed Czornyj armed with the sword standing next to another man who was visibly injured. Officers issued repeated verbal commands for Czornyj to drop the weapon. When he did not comply and reportedly continued threatening behavior, an officer discharged their firearm, striking Czornyj. He was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital, where he later died.

On 05/27/2025 at approximately 10:12 p.m., off-duty Colonie Police Department Officer Jason Tusch was driving a personal vehicle on Old Loudon Road near Purtell Avenue when he struck 65-year-old pedestrian John Bonds. Bonds was pushing a shopping cart and walking in the roadway. He sustained critical injuries and died on 06/02/2025. Surveillance footage released by the New York Attorney General’s Office showed no attempt to brake before impact. Officer Tusch remained at the scene and has been placed on administrative leave. The incident is under investigation by the Office of Special Investigation.

On May 13, 2025, NYPD officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at 108 Christopher Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. A woman reported that her ex-boyfriend had entered her home, was threatening her, and had a history of carrying weapons including machetes and hammers. Officers accompanied her to the apartment, where they encountered the 25-year-old man inside. He allegedly pulled a large black knife from his waistband and advanced toward the officers. A Taser was deployed but failed. One officer opened fire, shooting the man twice in the chest. He was transported to Brookdale University Hospital and pronounced dead. The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident.

Around 9:54 p.m., Syracuse Police responded to reports of shots fired at an apartment building on North Townsend Street. Officers encountered 42-year-old Donnell Hogan, who was actively shooting inside the building. At least one officer fired their weapon during the encounter. Hogan was pronounced dead at the scene. The New York State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident.

Morehouse, 38, of Warrensburg, did not stop. Police chased the motorcycle but claimed they had called off the chase near Lafayette Street, however, Glens Falls police observed the motorcycle crash on Bacon Street near Glen Street moments later. Morehouse died at the scene. His passenger, Suzie J. Etu, 38, of South Glens Falls, was taken to Glens Falls Hospital where she later died.

On May 2, 2025, a 28-year-old man was shot and killed by police officers in Brooklyn after a police chase for an allegedly stolen Porsche. The NYPD's Community Response Team was searching for stolen vehicles when they identified the Porsche as suspicious and attempted to pull it over. The driver fled on the Belt Parkway, and officers set up roadblocks to intercept the car. The driver swerved off the road toward officers and the roadblock, nearly hitting an officer. In response, the officer fired a single shot.
The man was pulled from the car and taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he later died. At least one passenger in the stolen vehicle was taken into custody, though charges have not been filed.

On 04/25/2025, New York State Police attempted to stop a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck on Route 9W in Newburgh for traffic violations. The driver did not stop. Troopers escalated a high-speed chase on Route 9W, then onto State Route 32, and finally westbound on Interstate 84. Troopers claimed that they discontinued the pursuit due to speeds, and shortly after, the pickup truck collided with a tractor (without a trailer) and crashed off the shoulder of I-84. Passenger Phelipe Figueroa, 25, of Otisville, was transported to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, where he was pronounced dead.

Despite deployment of Tasers, he allegedly moved toward them. Officers opened fire. The man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and pronounced dead.

On April 12, 2025, New York State Police responded to a domestic incident on Forrest Drive in Deerpark. Upon arrival, they found a man on the porch who reported being stabbed by a woman inside the home. Shortly after, 69-year-old Nancy Loftus exited the residence and allegedly pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at the troopers. Two troopers fired, striking Loftus. She was transported to Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, where she was pronounced dead. The weapon was later identified as a pellet gun.

On April 9, 2025, at approximately 1:43 p.m., David M. Levine arrived at the New York State Police Saratoga Barracks in Malta, New York. He exited his vehicle armed with a hunting-style rifle and began firing multiple rounds into the occupied barracks building. Troopers inside responded to the gunfire, confronted Levine in the parking lot, and instructed him to drop his weapon. Levine refused to comply and aimed his firearm at the officers, prompting them to open fire, killing him. The New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation has initiated a preliminary assessment of the shooting.

On April 7, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Madison County Sheriff's deputies arrived at a residence in Sullivan, New York, to serve an eviction notice. Upon arrival, deputies heard what they believed to be gunshots from within the home. The male occupant then barricaded himself inside, initiating a standoff that lasted approximately 41 hours. Throughout the standoff, law enforcement, including crisis mental health personnel, attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution. On April 9, around 3:30 a.m., the standoff concluded when the man was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Madison County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the incident.
