A 43-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive inside a holding cell at Manhattan Criminal Court at 100 Centre Street on the morning of March 26, 2025. He had been arrested hours earlier inside the Times Square subway station. EMS transported him to NewYork-Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The NYPD Force Investigation Division is investigating. This was the second such in-custody death reported in the same week in New York City.

On March 6, 2025, at approximately 5:20 a.m., NYPD officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a gun in the parking lot of a Home Depot on Veterans Road West in Staten Island, New York. Upon arrival, officers observed a 55-year-old man sitting in a black Jeep Wrangler, firing shots into the air. The officers took tactical positions and repeatedly instructed the man to show his hands and drop the firearm. The man did not comply and instead pointed the firearm at the officers, prompting five officers to discharge their weapons, striking him multiple times. The man was transported to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver, along with numerous shell casings and live ammunition, was recovered at the scene. On 03/01/2025, 22-year-old Messiah Nantwi was found unresponsive at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, New York. He was transported to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where he was pronounced dead. Nantwi had been serving a five-year sentence for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon related to a 2021 incident involving an exchange of gunfire with police officers.

In response to Nantwi's death, Governor Kathy Hochul directed the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to place 15 staff members on administrative leave. The New York State Police, in conjunction with the department's Office of Special Investigations, are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The New York Attorney General's Office recused itself from the investigation due to conflicts of interest, as four of the corrections officers involved are defendants in other matters where they are or were represented by attorneys in the Attorney General's State Counsel Division. Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick has been appointed as special prosecutor for this case.

This incident follows a similar case in December 2024, when Robert Brooks died after an encounter with corrections officers at the nearby Marcy Correctional Facility. Six corrections officers have been charged with murder in connection with Brooks' death.

Demonte during an investigation into child sexual exploitation at the Melone Village housing complex in Auburn, New York. Port Jervis PD attempted to traffic stop a motorcycle that was allegedly speeding. The motorcycle did not stop. Police accelerated a chase that ended when the motorcycle crashed into an SUV and light post and died. He was apparently hunted at high-speed for a traffic violation. Police claim that they “called off the pursuit” immediately prior to impact and did not publicly identify him.
