He struck a Florence officer in the shoulder and also injured a female bystander. Both the officer and the woman were hospitalized in stable condition. Officers escalated a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, Morton collided head-on with another vehicle. Morton was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

On 01/24/2025, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a felony warrant on 39-year-old Ricardo Louis Augustus Sutherland in Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Sutherland reportedly opened fire on law enforcement and then fled into a wooded area near Pleasant Grove Road. Deputies pursued him, but Sutherland was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
