The police story is very vague so far, not distinguishing whether this was an armed hostile residential burglary type entry or whether it perhaps was what police refer to as “disturbance call” and a familiar person is not wanted but not violent or causing harm and police are requested to escort them out. There have been no press conferences or updates in the first days after the killing. Police state that he "had a gun.” It is not known whether he produced it or threatened anyone or whether it was in his pocket. ALEA is investigating the killing. An officer drove across an intersection and ran a red light with allegedly blue lights on but no siren at 11 p.m. and pulled into the path of a motorcycle. The police vehicle caused Sumner Howard to crash his motorcycle, killing him. Fox10 pulled the crash report and found that a brick building to the right blocks the view of any approaching cars from the south, which means Howard likely never saw the police car. It had no sirens and Howard very likely was completely unaware of the police car that ran the red light and suddenly blocked his lane.
The intersection has a known blind spot. Police allege that he was speeding through red lights because he was on an “emergency call” but did not disclose what emergency they were chasing. The lack of sirens late at night was also not explained by MPD.
Mobile PD finally disclosed that the officer was Roy Adams Jr. This was the fourth crash he has caused in 2024 alone. Two of the crashes occurred on the same day separately. Another crash happened when he fell asleep while driving his patrol car. Another crash happened when he was seen running a stop sign. The final crash occurred on 7/9/2024 during which he killed Sumner Howard.
This is the second motorcyclist killed in Mobile in 2024 by negligent MPD officers. The first case, motorcyclist Robert Sayen who was killed by MPD while riding a motorcycle, is currently before a grand jury. The officer in the Sayen crash was Callegari.

Motorcyclist Robert Sayen was killed in a collision with Mobile PD officer Paul Callegari. Eyewitnesses called 911 and stated that a Mobile PD cruiser hit and killed the motorcyclist and the officer had fled the scene. Eyewitness video is linked below. Four separate eyewitnesses backed up the initial 911 call that had reported the officer fleeing the scene. The incident was investigated by ALEA who only found the officer to have been "speeding" when he killed Robert Sayen, no mention of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident. Officer Callegari had been speeding through the intersection at 56 mph and ALEA confirmed that there had been no emergency or reason for speeding. Mobile PD have not taken any disciplinary action other than reassigning the officer on administrative duty. Officer Callegari is also under investigation for the beating of motorist Beezer DuBose Jr. whom he pulled from his car.
