On November 2, 2025, a man was shot and killed by officers of the Denton Police Department following a standoff in a north-Denton neighborhood near the 1300 block of Oxford Lane. Police arrived around 3:55 a.m. after a 911 call reporting a man shooting at unoccupied vehicles. The responding officers established a perimeter and attempted communication, but the man continued firing toward officers. Officers returned fire. The man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On October 31, 2025 at approximately 2:45 p.m., an off-duty deputy of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office was placing his child in his vehicle when Darrius Williams, 27, reportedly attempted to enter the deputy’s vehicle. The deputy gave multiple verbal commands; when Williams allegedly opened the passenger side door, the deputy discharged his firearm, striking Williams multiple times. Williams was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. The deputy and his child were unharmed. Investigations by the sheriff’s office and the Harris County District Attorney are ongoing.

On 10/25/2025, around 1 a.m., Fairfield police responded to a welfare check regarding a woman walking in the roadway on County Road 606 in Fairfield, Texas. While an officer was speaking with the woman, a pickup truck came from a nearby oil field area and collided head-on with the officer’s patrol vehicle. The driver exited the truck, and during the encounter, the officer opened fire, striking him. The man was taken to Freestone Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Texas Rangers are conducting the investigation, and the officer was placed on administrative leave.

Ryver’s brother, 10 year old Jude Dylan Russell, was also critically injured in the same crash and later died. Baytown police said Hightower was on duty and responding to an in progress person with a weapon call where an officer on scene requested additional units. Reporting and court records say investigators alleged Hightower was speeding and did not have emergency lights or sirens activated at the time of the collision. A Harris County grand jury later indicted Hightower on two counts of manslaughter for the two children’s deaths and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon tied to injuries to another child in the minivan. The indictment reflects that prosecutors presented evidence supporting felony criminal responsibility for the driving conduct described in the charging documents. When approached, the man ran toward the railroad tracks. Officers pursued him and reported that he held an object resembling a knife. The man turned toward the officers and said he would kill them. He reportedly advanced toward police, and officers opened fire. The man was later found to have been holding two mechanical pencils, not a knife. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. The Texas Rangers are conducting the investigation, and both officers were placed on administrative leave with pay.
