OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 29, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Newark Police officers located an overdue U-Haul van parked in a shopping center on the 200 block of East Main Street. The vehicle had been reported as an unauthorized use vehicle after it was not returned on its due date of March 18.
When officers approached the van, the driver, identified as 22-year-old Gordon Turner of New Castle, Delaware, fled the scene, driving over a curb and striking a marked police vehicle. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.Approximately five minutes later, the U-Haul was traveling westbound on East Main Street at a high rate of speed when it struck two pedestrians who were standing next to a parked car. The van then collided with several parked vehicles before coming to a stop.
One of the pedestrians, a 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate student, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other pedestrian, also a 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate student, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.Three additional individuals were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and three others sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment.
