Officers established a perimeter and summoned the Salina SWAT Team for assistance. Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol also responded to the location of the home. While awaiting the SWAT team's arrival, officers observed smoke and flames emanating from the garage. The garage door then opened, and a female emerged with her hands raised, followed by Jesse Wray. Wray took cover behind a parked truck in the driveway, assuming a shooting stance with his hands extended toward the officers.

In response, two Salina Police Department officers discharged nine rounds, none of which struck Wray. Wray then moved to the west side of the garage, where he encountered additional officers and troopers. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper and a Salina Police Department officer fired four shots, fatally wounding Wray. He was pronounced deceased at the location at 8:45 p.m. The female was evaluated at Salina Regional Health Center and later released.

On June 26, the Sedgwick County K-9 Cadaver Team joined the search. At approximately 10:35 a.m., a cadaver dog led searchers to Lightfoot's body, located several hundred yards southeast of his truck in a heavily wooded area. Marion County Coroner Don Hodson reported that Lightfoot died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A .380 ACP handgun was found under his left hand.

On April 15, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Butler County Sheriff's deputies initiated a pursuit of a 2023 Kawasaki EX650 motorcycle driven by 43-year-old Ignacio Cuanus Morales Jr. Deputies continued to chase him westbound onto Towanda Avenue in El Dorado until Morales's motorcycle collided with the right rear corner of a Ford F-150. Morales was pronounced deceased at the location. Authorities have not disclosed the reason for the initial pursuit.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 9, 2024, at approximately 6:55 a.m., a motorist reported a vehicle stopped in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 160, about one mile west of Attica, Kansas. A Harper County Sheriff's deputy arrived and found a tan 2006 Toyota Prius halted in the middle of the highway. Approaching to offer assistance, the deputy observed the driver, 54-year-old Cheryl R. Gaines of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, holding a knife in one hand and scissors in the other.

An officer from the Attica Police Department soon joined the deputy. Both officers retreated approximately 100 yards from the vehicle and repeatedly commanded Gaines to drop her weapons and exit the car. Gaines exited the vehicle but refused to relinquish the knife and scissors. She then charged at the officers. As they retreated, the Attica officer tripped and fell. Gaines approached the fallen officer, still armed, prompting the Harper County deputy to fire three shots, striking her.

Emergency Medical Services pronounced Gaines deceased at the location around 7:15 a.m.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting a thorough and independent investigation, with findings to be presented to the Harper County Attorney for review.

On April 7, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., 18-year-old Kasenn Lane Dollar was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on U.S. Highway 160, about 3.5 miles west of Independence, Kansas. His vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 2017 Dodge Charger driven by 26-year-old Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy Justin Ward.

A second deputy, 28-year-old Zachary Farmer, was following in a 2022 Dodge Durango and sustained minor damage while attempting to avoid the collision. Dollar was pronounced deceased at the scene. Deputy Ward suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Deputy Farmer was not injured. Two passengers in Dollar's vehicle, including 18-year-old Amir Luten, sustained minor injuries.
