On May 10, 2025, David Elliot Dickerson, a 72-year-old inmate at the Forsyth County Detention Center, was found unresponsive in his cell. Detention staff initiated CPR and other lifesaving measures; however, Dickerson was pronounced dead by emergency medical services. He had been arrested on May 7, 2025, on charges of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult and indecent liberties with a minor. In accordance with protocol, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office has requested an independent investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

On the morning of May 8, 2025, Trooper Nolan J. Neal of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 85 southbound near mile marker 185 for a pickup truck lacking a registration plate. The driver, later identified as 53-year-old Philip Aiken Brown of Creedmoor, provided false information during the stop. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Brown had multiple active warrants for his arrest. As Trooper Neal attempted to take Brown into custody, Brown fled the scene. The trooper escalated a chase reaching up to 85 mph. The chase concluded when Brown exited onto Red Mill Road, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into an embankment. Following the crash, Trooper Neal commanded Brown to show his hands. Brown failed to comply and eventually displayed a dark object in his hand, prompting Trooper Neal to discharge his firearm, striking Brown. Emergency medical services were called, and life-saving measures were administered; however, Brown succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is also conducting an independent review of the incident.

On April 22, 2025, around 7:30 a.m., U.S. Marshals and Nash County deputies attempted to serve a second-degree murder warrant from New York on 40-year-old Donald Fields at a residence on Crabtree Lane near Castalia, North Carolina. Fields fled into nearby woods with a 9mm pistol, told officers he would not be taken alive, and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Fields had previously served 20 years in Connecticut for murder and was wanted for parole violations. On April 22, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m., a Maxton Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle whose driver refused to exit and allegedly tried to run over the officer. The officer escalated a chase and Scotland County deputies also engaged in chasing 36-year-old Michael McCartney of Laurinburg, who was then driving the wrong way on Highway 74, fleeing from numerous police vehicles until he collided head on with a van. McCartney was pronounced dead at the crash site. The female driver of the van sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

On April 19, 2025, at approximately 6:00 a.m., 57-year-old Geneva Daniels began receiving medical treatment while in custody at the Buncombe County Detention Facility in Asheville, North Carolina. She was transported to Mission Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Daniels had been booked into the facility on April 18, 2025, on charges of possession of methamphetamine.
The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office has notified Daniels' next of kin, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the District Attorney's Office. The cause of death is currently under investigation.

On 03/19/2025, at approximately 7:15 a.m., Pinehurst police responded to a report of a suspicious person at a home on Remington Lane. Officers saw smoke coming from the home and called firefighters. While firefighters were working, a man exited the house, grabbed an ax left by the door, and charged at officers and firefighters. Police fired a Taser, but it was ineffective. Officers opened fire, killing him. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident.

On January 7, 2025, officers from the Sanford Police Department responded to a domestic situation at 1616 Columbine Road in Sanford, North Carolina. A female victim had fled to a neighbor's house, reporting that she had been held against her will but managed to escape. Police secured the area and obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect, identified as 50-year-old David Wayne Worth, on charges of second-degree kidnapping. Upon entering the residence around 10:40 p.m., officers found Worth deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers responded to a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence on Zachary's Keep Court. Upon arrival, they heard screams from multiple individuals, including children, inside the home. As the door opened, they observed Ndimubandi armed with a knife. When officers attempted to communicate with him, Ndimubandi moved toward them with the knife, prompting an officer to discharge their firearm in self-defense, striking him. Ndimubandi was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

On January 10, 2025, Timothy Welch was killed by police at a traffic stop in North Carolina.

He had previously been known as the man who opened fire with an AR-15 at Comet Ping Pong in D.C. on Dec. 6, 2016. The restaurant had been known as the target of the Pizzagate QAnon psyop which claimed that children were abused and held by prominent politicians in the basement or in tunnels under the restaurant.

After the Pizzagate shooting, he was sentenced by then-U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on June 22, 2017, to four years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Welch served his full sentence and was released from federal prison on May 28, 2020.

On January 4, 2025, Welch was involved in a traffic stop in Kannapolis, North Carolina, where he was shot and killed by police. He was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over, and he was recognized as having an outstanding warrant for a felony probation violation. During the arrest attempt, he allegedly pulled out a handgun.. Police shot and killed him. The names of the officer and the police department have not been released. He died from his injuries 2 days later.

On December 30, 2024, Chapel Hill police officers attempted to stop a vehicle allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash earlier in Chapel Hill. The driver was identified as 43-year-old Lawrence Richard Edwards of Chapel Hill. Police chased the vehicle into Carrboro and escalated a high-speed chase that ended at the intersection of Oak Avenue and East Poplar Avenue, where the vehicle crashed. Edwards and his passenger, 43-year-old Jonathan Lynn Blansett of Durham, both died. Police have so far not explained why they conducted the high-speed chase.

On 12/30/2024, deputies from the Columbus County Sheriff's Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on the 100 block of Country Club Road in Whiteville, North Carolina. Major B. High arrived at the scene and observed a 53-year-old man near a crashed truck. The man returned to his vehicle upon the arrival of the Highway Patrol and refused to exit. Deputies heard a single gunshot and the sound of shattering glass. Utilizing the county's armored vehicle, deputies approached and found the man dead inside the vehicle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Columbus County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation, and the Highway Patrol has completed a report on the vehicle accident.
