On 12/16/2025 the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed standoff at a home on Pittsboro Goldston Road that turned into a hostage situation. Deputies breached the residence out of concern for the safety of the person being held. During the incident Senior Deputy Matthew Mitchell was shot in the arm and leg and taken to the hospital with injuries from the shooting. On 07/06/2025, around 12:30 a.m., Transylvania County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check and found a vehicle in the Pizza Hut parking lot at 62 Pisgah Highway in Pisgah Forest. As deputies approached, the person inside allegedly began shooting at them. Deputies opened fire and killed the individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.
