On 12/26/2025, Tjamel Ali Hamlin II, 36, was killed during a shooting that occurred at a business in Mint Hill during a child custody exchange. On 12/16/2025 the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed standoff at a home on Pittsboro Goldston Road that turned into a hostage situation. Deputies breached the residence out of concern for the safety of the person being held. During the incident Senior Deputy Matthew Mitchell was shot in the arm and leg and taken to the hospital with injuries from the shooting. Officers rescued the hostage and the suspect, Kevin Dean Hammer, was found dead inside the home. Officials have not yet released how he died. On October 2, 2025, at approximately 4:11 p.m., Dare Central Communications received a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible crime in progress in the 200 block of Mother Vineyard Road. Manteo Police Officers responded with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, officers were confronted by 49-year-old Denny Winslow who was reportedly armed. An officer opened fire, striking Winslow. Winslow was pronounced deceased at the scene. She had become unhoused with her son after hurricane Ian and had experienced a number of challenges prior to being killed by police.

On 09/22/2025 at about 5:00 a.m., Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at the Minuteman convenience store on Mercantile Drive in Leland. Deputies encountered Brandon Wayne Taylor, 34, of Collinsville, Virginia. According to officials, Taylor drew a firearm and fired, striking a deputy twice. Deputies opened fire, killing him. The deputy was taken to a hospital and later released. Taylor’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

On 08/05/2025 at approximately 4:06 p.m., a Greensboro Police officer responded after being flagged down by a resident reporting a trespasser on Marion Street. Upon arrival, the officer encountered Said Ezzine, who refused multiple commands and became confrontational. Ezzine retrieved a weapon and advanced aggressively toward the officer. The officer then opened fire, striking Ezzine.

The officer immediately called for emergency medical services and administered first aid at the scene, but Ezzine was pronounced dead there. On August 2, 2025, around 1:30 p.m., Statesville Police responded to a shooting on Fifth Street near Highway 70 and found 51-year-old Surtonia Burton in the front yard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
