On November 1, 2024, Independence Police officers initiated a high-speed pursuit of Terry James Lewis Jr. for a failed traffic stop on Interstate 470. During the chase, Lewis's vehicle collided head-on with a police cruiser after he attempted a U-turn and drove the wrong way on an exit ramp near I-70. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene, and the officer involved sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

On October 23, 2024, at approximately midnight, 21-year-old Lucas Menz fled from Missouri State Highway Patrol officers during an attempted traffic stop on southbound Interstate 55, just north of South Lindbergh Boulevard in St. Louis County. Traveling at a high rate of speed, Menz lost control of his Lexus ES, veered off the left side of the road, and overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Menz was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
