On April 29, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Newark Police officers located an overdue U-Haul van parked in a shopping center on the 200 block of East Main Street. The vehicle had been reported as an unauthorized use vehicle after it was not returned on its due date of March 18.
When officers approached the van, the driver, identified as 22-year-old Gordon Turner of New Castle, Delaware, fled the scene, driving over a curb and striking a marked police vehicle. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.Approximately five minutes later, the U-Haul was traveling westbound on East Main Street at a high rate of speed when it struck two pedestrians who were standing next to a parked car. The van then collided with several parked vehicles before coming to a stop.
One of the pedestrians, a 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate student, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other pedestrian, also a 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate student, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.Three additional individuals were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and three others sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 25, 2025, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Norfolk Police officers responded to a report of a disorderly person in the 800 block of East Little Creek Road. The individual, identified as 37-year-old Charlene Carey-Chavez, had reportedly been involved in an assault the previous day and had returned to the area.
Officers located Carey-Chavez in the 7600 block of Sewells Point Road. Upon contact, she produced a weapon and failed to comply with officers' commands to drop it. Officers discharged their service weapons, striking Carey-Chavez and inflicting life-threatening injuries. She was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
As a result of the investigation, Carey-Chavez was charged with assault and battery, grand larceny, and brandishing a firearm. She remains hospitalized and will be taken to Norfolk City Jail upon her release. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

On April 24, 2025, at approximately 10:25 a.m., Baltimore County police responded to reports of a man walking along Leeds Avenue carrying a bow and arrow. Witnesses observed the man wearing a mask and contacted authorities. Officers confronted the individual at the intersection of Leeds and North Avenues. According to witnesses, officers issued commands for the man to drop his weapon. A detective then discharged his firearm, striking the man. Officers administered life-saving measures before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
