On 10/26/2021, Pontoon Beach Police Officer Tyler Timmins was shot while investigating a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a Speedway gas station at the intersection of Chain of Rocks Road and Pontoon Road. During the encounter, a man inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Timmins. He was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries. Timmins had served in law enforcement for approximately 14 years and was 36 years old. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

On 10/25/2021, Burns Police Chief Stephen Evans was killed in a vehicle crash on K-77 Highway near El Dorado while on duty. He observed a vehicle he believed to be stolen traveling in the opposite direction and attempted to make a U-turn to investigate. During the maneuver, another vehicle traveling southbound struck his patrol car. He died from injuries sustained in the crash. Evans also served with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and had prior service with the Kansas Department of Corrections. He was 44 years old and is survived by his wife and three children.

On 10/24/2021, Erie Police Officer Jason Michael Belton died from complications of COVID-19 after contracting the virus in the line of duty while interacting with a COVID-positive individual during police work. He died at his home in Erie at age 47. Belton had served with the Erie Police Department for approximately 17 years and was also a United States Marine Corps veteran. He is survived by his two daughters.

On 10/24/2021, Beaverton Police Sergeant Brian Gaunt died from complications of COVID-19 after contracting the virus in the line of duty. He served with the Beaverton Police Department for 21 years and worked in multiple assignments including patrol, detective, and K9 unit operations. Gaunt was a United States Coast Guard veteran before entering law enforcement. He died at age 55 at his home after battling the illness.

On 09/15/2021, Lone Star College System Police Department officer Franklin Joe died from COVID-19 that ODMP lists as contracted in the line of duty. ODMP reports he had served with the department for several years and had prior law enforcement service in Texas.

On 09/10/2021, Officer Thomas Ouellette, 44, of the Bow Police Department, was driving his personal Ford Expedition southbound on I-89 when his vehicle drifted from the right-hand travel lane into the breakdown lane. The vehicle struck the rear of a parked, disabled tractor-trailer truck. Two of Officer Ouellette’s children, Nicholas Ouellette, 16, and Gavin Ouellette, 6, were killed in the collision. While the media did not confirm his on-duty status, it is assumed he was off-duty as he was driving his personal vehicle.

On 08/03/2021, Officer George Gonzalez of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency was attacked at approximately 10:35 a.m. on a bus/metro platform outside the Pentagon in Arlington. A man, identified as Austin William Lanz, 27, ambushed Gonzalez and stabbed him in the neck. Responding officers engaged the attacker and fatally shot him. Gonzalez died from his injuries and multiple bystanders were also wounded in the incident.

On 08/01/2021, Deputy Michael C. Hoy, 49, of the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office, was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident on State Route 67 near Marseilles, Ohio. While riding his 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle, Deputy Hoy collided with a deer, resulting in a crash. He was transported to Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky, where he was pronounced dead.

On 07/31/2021, retired Rock Hill Police Lieutenant Larry Vaughan, 54, was found beaten to death inside his apartment at the Anderson Apartments. Investigators determined he was killed by former Chester County Sheriff’s Deputy Evan Hawthorne, 31. On 09/02/2025, a jury convicted Hawthorne of murder, and Judge Keith Kelly sentenced him to life in prison.

On July 31, 2021, at approximately 12:20 a.m., Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Daniel Paul Cox, a 24-year veteran of the agency and a U.S. Army veteran, was killed in a head-on collision on State Route 86 near Sells, Arizona. The crash involved his Border Patrol vehicle and another car. Both Cox and the other driver were pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation by the Tohono O’odham Police Department.

On 07/29/2021, Officer Gunther Hashida, age 43, of the Metropolitan Police Department, was found dead in his residence from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been assigned to the Emergency Response Team and was among those who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 attack. His death was one of four suicides among officers who served during or immediately after the riot.

On 07/10/2021, Officer Kyle DeFreytag, age 26, of the Metropolitan Police Department, died by suicide. He was one of several officers who had responded to the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. His death was confirmed by the department in early August 2021 and came shortly after that of Officer Gunther Hashida. Both were recognized as part of the rising toll of suicides among officers who defended the Capitol during the attack.

On June 17, 2021, Officer Joseph William Burson of the Holly Springs Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle during a traffic stop on Hickory Road. The driver refused to comply and dragged Officer Burson with the vehicle. During the incident, Burson discharged his weapon and fatally shot the driver. Officer Burson died from injuries sustained during the dragging. He had served with the department for approximately 18 months.

On 05/19/2021, Liberty County deputies located Harris County Precinct 1 Sgt. Robert Johnson after he became the focus of a multi-agency investigation into child sexual abuse allegations and threatened to take his own life. Deputies attempted a traffic stop after identifying his vehicle near a cabin community; Johnson drove away and triggered a pursuit that ended when officers stopped his vehicle on the FM 787 bridge over the Trinity River. Police surrounded the vehicle, established containment, and held a standoff lasting several hours while negotiators communicated with him. During the confrontation Johnson made phone calls admitting to sexual abuse of minors and implicated coworkers, information that later led to arrests and charges against two employees. Negotiations continued for roughly six hours before Johnson shot himself inside the vehicle and died before officers took custody.

Officer Jesse Peter Madsen, 45, served with the Tampa Police Department for 16 years. On March 9, 2021, around 1 a.m., Officer Madsen was killed after he veered into oncoming traffic on I-275 to intercept a wrong-way driver, Joshua Daniel Montague. The collision resulted in the deaths of both Officer Madsen and Montague. Officer Madsen was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and is survived by his wife and three children.

On February 26, 2021, Officer Dominic J. Winum initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle. Before he could exit his patrol vehicle, the driver, Dakota G. Richards, exited his vehicle and opened fire, killing Officer Winum. Richards fled the scene into nearby woods. Police later found him hiding in a barn. Richards allegedly made a threatening movement, and deputies shot and killed him in response.

On February 18, 2021, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Magli was killed during a pursuit involving a drunken driver. Deputies had responded to a report of a man passed out in a truck, identified as 30-year-old Robert Allen Holzaepfel. When emergency responders broke a window to check on him, Holzaepfel awoke and fled. Deputies escalated a chase as Holzaepfel drove recklessly and crossed the median on East Lake Road. Deputy Magli parked his cruiser in the median to deploy spike strips, but the fleeing driver lost control of his truck, spun out, and struck Magli, pinning him beneath his patrol vehicle. Magli died at the scene. The driver was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and multiple felonies.

Deputy Michael J. Magli of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office was killed during a police pursuit incident. He had positioned his patrol car in the median at East Lake Road and Forelock Road to deploy stop sticks designed to puncture tires of a fleeing vehicle. Robert Allen Holzaepfel, 33, who was allegedly driving under the influence and on a suspended license, struck and killed Magli with his truck during the pursuit.

On February 4, 2021, New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott was fatally shot during a traffic stop near Deming, New Mexico, by Omar Felix Cueva. After the shooting, Cueva fled the scene, leading to a pursuit and a subsequent shootout with law enforcement officers, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Cueva was shot and killed during the confrontation.

On 01/15/2021, Officer Jeffrey Smith, 35, of the Metropolitan Police Department, died by suicide nine days after being injured in the line of duty while responding to the January 6 Capitol attack. His death was later officially ruled as having occurred in the line of duty, and Congress formally recognized it as related to the events of that day.

On January 11, 2021, Master Corporal Brian LaVigne of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was intentionally struck and killed by a suspect during a police pursuit in Brandon, Florida. Deputies responded to calls about Travis Garrett, 32, acting erratically and naked at an apartment complex. After resisting arrest and attacking deputies, Garrett drove off. While other deputies pursued him, LaVigne—who was not involved in the chase—was parked with lights on when Garrett crossed two lanes and rammed into his patrol vehicle at 76 mph. LaVigne, a 30-year veteran just hours from retirement, was killed. Garrett had cocaine and marijuana in his system and was sentenced to 45 years in prison in March 2025 after a plea deal.

On 01/09/2021, Officer Howard Charles Liebengood, age 51, of the United States Capitol Police died by suicide at his home in Alexandria, Virginia. His death occurred three days after he served at the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 attack. Liebengood had been with the department since 2005 and was assigned to the Senate Division. His death was later officially recognized by Congress and the Department of Justice as a line-of-duty death.

On January 6, 2021, at approximately 10:50 p.m., a deputy from the Marion County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Patrick J. McCormick, who refused to stop. The deputy initiated a pursuit of McCormick’s vehicle, which continued driving southbound on Maiden Down Road. The deputy pursued McCormick at high speeds.

During the chase, McCormick collided with a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis that was traveling on Jackson Road, not involved in the pursuit. The crash occurred at the intersection of Jackson Road and Maiden Down Road. Patrick McCormick, the fleeing driver, was killed instantly in the crash. The other vehicle involved was driven by Jonathan David Price, who was the driver of the Dodge Charger being pursued. Price, the officer’s target in the chase, was critically injured and later died at a local hospital due to the injuries sustained in the crash.

On 12/10/2020, Corporal Jack Lee Guthrie Jr. contracted COVID-19 while serving at the Dallas College North Lake Campus at 5001 N MacArthur Boulevard in Irving. He remained ill and died on 01/03/2021 from complications related to the infection. Guthrie had served in law enforcement for decades and was assigned to campus policing duties at the time of his illness.

On 03/20/2017, Enid Police Department officer Bart Lane Arnold was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Enid, Oklahoma. During the response, a man opened fire, fatally wounding Arnold. The suspect was later taken into custody.

On March 12, 2017, 27-year-old Officer Houston Largo of the Navajo Nation Police Department was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call in New Mexico. Despite being airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, Officer Largo succumbed to his injuries. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico and the FBI collaborated with state and tribal authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrator faced justice.

On 07/24/2003, DHS Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officer William Hayes was shot and killed in Houston, Texas, while attempting to arrest a man on federal immigration charges. During the attempted arrest, the man opened fire, striking Hayes. Authorities later arrested the shooter.
