Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik was dealing with a scandal involving a recent death in which an inmate was beaten to death by 3 corrections officers under him. Berdnik was planning to fire a total of 29 corrections officers. On Jan 23, 2024, he went into a bathroom of a Turkish restaurant and committed suicide for unknown reasons.

Officer Heiserman of the Manvel Police Department was placed under investigation for unknown reasons, drove to a church parking lot and committed suicide after learning of the investigation. Someone had filed a complaint that he had committed “invasive visual recording”, a serious felony in Texas which usually means photographing or videotaping a person without their consent. Police refused to answer how old the person was. With the death of Officer Heiserman, the investigation will not likely come to light now.

He was 73 years old at his death and was remembered publicly by city officials and police colleagues for his leadership and long career.

On 12/29/2023, Sergeant Marc Andrew McIntyre, age 55, with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office was shot and killed while responding to a welfare check and domestic disturbance call on Vineyard Road near Deason Street in Griffin, Georgia. McIntyre was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office since 2015, including assignments on the SWAT team. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported he was struck by gunfire from a resident at the scene and later died from his injuries. A suspect was taken into custody and charged with murder.

On 12/21/2023, Correctional Officer J Miller of the Washington State Department of Corrections was supervising incarcerated individuals at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen when an incarcerated person assaulted him. The assault caused severe head injuries. Miller was transported to Harbor Regional Health and later transferred for advanced care, where he died from his injuries. The department confirmed the assault and initiated a criminal investigation. Miller had served with the Washington State Department of Corrections for several years prior to his death. Jefferson County Deputy Juan Tierney Hall knocked on a door, gun in hand, while off-duty and when the unnamed 33-year-old man opened the door, the deputy opened fire and injured him. The injured man fired back and an injured Deputy Hall ran and collapsed in a grassy area and died. The deputy was not acting in the line of duty and it is unclear why he pursued and shot a man.

On 12/19/2023, Shannon Hills Police Officer Michael Cain Maxheimer, age 39, died after suffering a medical emergency while on duty. On 12/18/2023, Maxheimer helped a disabled motorist and later responded to a vicious animal complaint; after preparing to confront the reported animals he returned to the station and began feeling nausea and chest pain, was taken to a hospital, and died the following day. Maxheimer had 16 years of law enforcement experience including service with Benton, Bauxite, Alexander and other agencies before joining Shannon Hills PD three years earlier; obituary records list his survivors including his girlfriend and three daughters.
