On 05/19/2025, Deputy Daniel V. Chavira, 21, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was killed in a three-vehicle collision at approximately 3:17 p.m. on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. Chavira, who had just completed a double shift at the North County Correctional Facility, was off duty and driving home when the crash occurred. He sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he later died. Four other individuals, including two minors, were transported to the hospital with injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

On the morning of May 18, 2025, Laredo police responded to a report of an unresponsive man holding a firearm at a residence on the 8000 block of Milo Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 53-year-old male deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual was identified as an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. CBP confirmed the death and stated that their Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the matter. The Laredo Police Department is conducting the ongoing investigation.

On 05/16/2025, Alton Dale Berrian, a 56-year-old sergeant with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in Gulf Breeze, Florida, died after complications from a heart attack. On 05/08/2025, he helped a motorist move a disabled vehicle out of the roadway and later complained of pain, went to a hospital, lost consciousness, and was transferred for emergency surgery. He never regained consciousness and passed away on 05/16/2025. Berrian had served with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years and previously served with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

On 05/16/2025, Scott Alan Farmer, a 58-year-old former law enforcement officer, was involved in a fatal incident in Oregon City. Farmer, who served with the Canby Police Department from 2002 to 2022 and previously with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office from 2000 to 2002, called a police emergency line stating his intent to harm himself. Officers responded to his residence on Clairmont Way around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, Farmer exited the home armed with a loaded firearm. Despite commands to disarm, he fired five shots at an Oregon City police officer, who returned fire with three shots, striking Farmer in the hip. As Farmer lay on the ground, he apologized for shooting at the officer before turning the gun on himself, resulting in his death. The officer involved was uninjured and has been placed on critical incident leave.

Deputies removed two children from the home and found the bodies of Daniel Hutsell, 40, and his wife, Dinella "Danee" Hutsell. Authorities believe Daniel Hutsell, a sergeant with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Deputy Brandon Sikes, 51, of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed on April 26, 2025, during a traffic stop along Interstate 20 near Exit 194. Deputies attempted to serve a temporary protective order to James Blake Montgomery, 38, who initially appeared cooperative but then opened fire with a fully automatic 9mm AR pistol. Sikes was struck and killed during the gunfire. Deputy Gavin White was critically injured. The suspect fled in an RV, crashed, and was later found dead inside. Bomb-making materials, firearms, and pipe bombs were discovered in the vehicle. The shooting is under investigation.

On April 25, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Officer Sam Lively of the Tyler Police Department was traveling southbound on Troup Highway on his motorcycle. As he approached the intersection with East Southeast Loop 323, another vehicle traveling in the inside lane changed lanes into the outside lane, striking Officer Lively's motorcycle. The collision caused Officer Lively to be ejected from his motorcycle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Officer Lively had recently graduated from the police academy and had been sworn into the department for five months. An autopsy was ordered, and a memorial escort was held for the officer as he was transferred to a Lindale funeral home. ​

On April 23, 2025, deputies from the Clark County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an occupied residential burglary in the 9000 block of NE 79th Street in Vancouver, Washington. The caller reported a male subject inside the residence, who then fled the scene on foot.​

During a search of the area, law enforcement officers discovered a vehicle nearby with a deceased individual inside, matching the description of the suspect. The individual was identified as Charles “Rob” Gardiner, the Interim Chief of the Cowlitz Tribal Public Safety Department. Evidence suggests that Gardiner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On April 22, 2025, around 12:30 p.m., Dawson County Sheriff's Deputy Jessie Perez, 42, was conducting a traffic stop on West U.S. Highway 180 near North Avenue V in Lamesa, Texas. During the stop, a passing commercial vehicle threw debris that struck Perez. He was transported to Lamesa Medical Arts Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. Perez had been with the department for eight months and also served as a city council member in O'Donnell and as a firefighter and EMS member. The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

On April 15, 2025, Lieutenant Helio Garcia of the South Fulton Police Department was killed in a head-on collision while on duty. Garcia was driving his patrol vehicle eastbound on Flat Shoals Road near Connell Road when his vehicle was hit head on by a car. Garcia was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and died.

On 04/10/2025, 34-year-old Officer Malissa Torres of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 18th District, was found fatally shot in a first-floor restroom at the station on 1160 N. Larrabee St. in Chicago’s Near North Side around 2:30 a.m. The wound was ruled an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Her colleagues described her as warm, caring, deeply proud of her young son, and a valued member of the CAPS unit.

On April 9, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Melissa Pollard of the Wood County Sheriff's Office was involved in a vehicle collision at the intersection of FM 14 and State Highway 37-S, between Quitman and Winnsboro. Deputy Pollard's patrol vehicle collided with the back of a semi-truck. She was transported to UT Health Quitman, where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. Deputy Pollard had served with the Wood County Sheriff's Office for over eight years and had previously served with the Fannin County Sheriff's Office and the Collin County Sheriff's Office.

On April 9, 2025, Correctional Officer David Hilburger, 53, was found deceased in his state housing unit at Groveland Correctional Facility after failing to report for duty. A wellness check was conducted, and he was discovered in his room. On April 4, 2025, Suffolk County Police officers conducted a welfare check at the Brentwood residence of Bruce Boyd, a retired New York City Department of Correction officer. Upon arrival, Boyd's wife allowed officers into the home, where they found Boyd holding a knife and suffering from self-inflicted wounds. Boyd allegedly moved toward the officers with the knife. At least one officer fired, striking him. Boyd was transported to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On 04/02/2025, William May, a 38-year-old deputy with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office in Mossy Head, Florida, was killed in the line of duty after being shot while responding to a disturbance call at a Dollar General store. May had volunteered to work overtime that day and was escorting a man from the store when the suspect drew a firearm and fired multiple shots, striking May. Despite being wounded, May returned fire and struck the suspect before being transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries later that evening. He had served with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office since 2014 and had been a deputy sheriff since 2019.

On 03/21/2025, Robert G. Porfert, a 68-year-old retired sergeant of the New York City Police Department, died in Kings Park, New York from pancreatic cancer attributed to toxic exposure sustained during his work at the World Trade Center recovery operations following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Porfert served with the NYPD in narcotics and retired in 2004. His death has been recognized in department memorials as resulting from his 9/11 response work.

On March 19, 2025, at approximately 7:25 a.m., Suffolk County police responded to a disturbance call at a residence on Bruno Lane in Dix Hills, New York. Upon arrival, officers discovered 75-year-old John "Jack" Miller, a retired Suffolk County Police detective and longtime member of the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigations revealed that Miller's son, 43-year-old Christopher Miller, had recently moved back into the family home following a divorce. Two days prior, Christopher was involved in a car accident and subsequent altercation, leading to his hospitalization. Unable to contact his son, John reported him missing. After being discharged, Christopher returned home, where an argument ensued between father and son. During the confrontation, Christopher allegedly retrieved a shotgun and shot his father multiple times. He then fled the scene and hid in a neighbor's shed on Seaman Neck Road. Responding officers recognized Christopher from the earlier missing person report and took him into custody. He has been charged with second-degree murder and is currently awaiting arraignment.​

Deputy Derrell Mohorn, age 39, of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, died off duty on March 19, 2025, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital. He had served previously with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division before joining Jackson County. His cause of death was not publicly disclosed.
