On June 22, 2025, an officer with the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department was killed in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash. The officer was riding along Hood Road when he lost control of the bike and struck a tree. The impact split the motorcycle in half. He was pronounced dead at the scene. On 06/07/2004, Reserve Deputy John C. Stahl III of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was responding to a suspicious vehicle call when he lost control of his patrol vehicle, which rolled and caught fire. A bystander pulled him from the vehicle, but he suffered a traumatic brain injury and lasting neurological damage. He lived with seizures and other complications for more than two decades before dying on 06/08/2025 at age 67 from those service-related injuries.

On Monday, 06/02/2025, Apache Junction officers stopped a 37-year-old male—later identified as Roger Nunez—for a reported road‑rage incident near Ironwood Drive and Elliott Road. The driver initially complied but when asked to exit the vehicle, he became aggressive, retrieved a handgun from the glove compartment, and exited the car. Officers deployed pepper‑ball munitions, which had no effect. The driver then fired four shots, striking Officer Gabriel Facio in the face. Fellow officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. Officer Krystal Rivera, a 36-year-old mother and four-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was fatally shot on June 5, 2025, during a foot pursuit in a residential area. While attempting to stop a person, the man ran into a building. Officers followed and encountered armed individuals. During the confrontation, Rivera was shot and later died at the hospital. Her partner Carlos A. Baker claims that he tripped and his gun accidentally discharged which hit her in the back and killed her. Instead of immediately calling 911 and requesting emergency medical assistance, Baker and another officer, Jon Hein, placed Rivera into a police vehicle and drove her toward a hospital. The vehicle crashed and caught fire. Still without an ambulance, she was transferred to yet another police vehicle and taken to the hospital, where she died less than an hour after being shot. Police have described the car fire as due to a mechanical issue/malfunction. No further technical cause has been made public. Chicago Police have not publicly provided a specific reason beyond “fellow officers rushed her.” Cook County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide. One detail prosecutors put on the record: Rivera’s partner lost his footing, and his weapon accidentally discharged.

Officer Carlos Baker is in the news weeks later for a new incident. Allegations: A 29-year-old off-duty female CPD officer says she was waiting for a rideshare when a man and a woman approached, demanded she delete “videos” she had taken in the bar, and then beat her in the face. She needed stitches for a split lip. The police report identifies the man as Officer Carlos Baker who shot Rivera. COPA is investigating.

Officer Baker has more than a dozen misconduct complaints on his record including at least 3 past suspensions and 2 reprimands which are detailed in the enclosed link. Despite this history, he had been assigned to an aggressive tactical team. Officer Baker is on paid leave and not in custody. Subsequent reporting revealed that Rivera and Baker had been involved in a secret romantic relationship while both were serving as officers with the Chicago Police Department. Rivera had recently ended the relationship and had threatened to disclose it to Baker’s other girlfriend. At the same time, Baker was reportedly angry about not receiving a promotion he believed he deserved. These personal and professional stressors are now being examined as possible contributing factors in the shooting.

The fact that Rivera was shot in the back has become a major point of scrutiny for investigators and the family’s attorneys. Prosecutors and oversight bodies are examining not only the shooting itself but also the actions taken afterward, including the failure to immediately summon emergency medical services and the handling of the scene.

Rivera’s mother and the family’s attorney, Antonio Romanucci, are publicly questioning CPD’s narrative, saying it doesn’t “pass the smell test,” and are demanding release of all body- and dash-cam along with an independent (Illinois State Police) investigation. A judge has temporarily blocked public release of some video and records while related criminal cases proceed. A wrongful death and civil rights lawsuit was filed against Baker, Hein, and the City of Chicago. The lawsuit alleges misconduct, abuse of authority, and systemic failures, emphasizing the romantic relationship, the breakup, the threat of disclosure, and Baker’s emotional state in the days leading up to the shooting. The case remains under active investigation, with no final determinations yet made. The police department has taken away his police powers, meaning he isn’t performing usual police duties (like street patrol or tactical assignments), but he remains inactive and on payroll with Chicago PD.

On June 5, 2025, around 4:53 p.m., Bernie Police Lieutenant Eddie Mays responded to a domestic disturbance call on West Crumb Avenue. On June 3, 2025, Sergeant Manuel Edwards, 55, of the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, was fatally struck by a U-Haul truck while riding his bicycle on Gaston Road in Katy, Texas. The incident occurred around 8:12 a.m. Edwards was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Sergeant Edwards began his law enforcement career in 2006 as a detention officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.He joined the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office in 2008 and transferred to Precinct 2 in May 2021. In 2023, he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Toll Road Division. Known for his joyful personality and dedication to his family, Edwards was remembered by colleagues as the epitome of a family man.

Around 9:05 p.m., officers from the Paynesville Police Department, Cold Spring Police Department, and the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic assault at Alstead's residence on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered Alstead's wife, who had visible, non-life-threatening injuries to her head and neck. She informed the officers that Alstead had assaulted her and was armed with a handgun in the basement.As officers attempted to arrest Alstead, he appeared at the bottom of the basement stairs holding a handgun. Stearns County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Orvis, a 23-year law enforcement veteran, discharged his firearm twice. Alstead then fired a single, self-inflicted gunshot. Despite officers' efforts to provide medical aid, Alstead was pronounced dead in his home. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that while Alstead sustained multiple gunshot injuries, his death resulted from the self-inflicted wound. A handgun and shell casings were recovered at the scene, and all involved officers were equipped with body cameras during the incident.

Larry Alstead had been a retired MSP state trooper with a long career in law enforcement, serving 32 years with the Minnesota State Patrol before retiring in 1999.

On 06/01/2025, Timothy Ontiveros, a 33-year-old police officer with the Bloomfield Police Department in Bloomfield, New Mexico, died from gunshot wounds sustained during a traffic stop on May 26, 2025. Ontiveros conducted a routine stop when the driver refused to comply, and during the attempt to take the suspect into custody the driver opened fire, striking Ontiveros. A second officer returned fire, killing the suspect. Ontiveros was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died days later from his injuries. On May 30, 2025, Hudson County Sheriff's Officer Justin Rivera, 29, fell from a ninth-story window of the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City around 9:30 a.m. The building was closed to the public due to a power outage at the time. Eyewitnesses heard windows breaking before he fell out. Rivera was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. The preliminary investigation suggests an accidental fall.

On 05/19/2025, Deputy Daniel V. Chavira, 21, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was killed in a three-vehicle collision at approximately 3:17 p.m. on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. Chavira, who had just completed a double shift at the North County Correctional Facility, was off duty and driving home when the crash occurred. He sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he later died. Four other individuals, including two minors, were transported to the hospital with injuries. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 53-year-old male deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual was identified as an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. On 05/08/2025, he helped a motorist move a disabled vehicle out of the roadway and later complained of pain, went to a hospital, lost consciousness, and was transferred for emergency surgery. On 05/16/2025, Scott Alan Farmer, a 58-year-old former law enforcement officer, was involved in a fatal incident in Oregon City. Farmer, who served with the Canby Police Department from 2002 to 2022 and previously with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office from 2000 to 2002, called a police emergency line stating his intent to harm himself. Officers responded to his residence on Clairmont Way around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, Farmer exited the home armed with a loaded firearm. Despite commands to disarm, he fired five shots at an Oregon City police officer, who returned fire with three shots, striking Farmer in the hip. As Farmer lay on the ground, he apologized for shooting at the officer before turning the gun on himself, resulting in his death. The officer involved was uninjured and has been placed on critical incident leave.

On 05/03/2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Austin Police Detective Israel Garcia was involved in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Comal County, near San Marcos. He was off duty at the time of the incident. Detective Garcia was pronounced dead at a hospital in San Marcos. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation. Detective Garcia had served with the Austin Police Department since 2009.

Deputy Brandon Sikes, 51, of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed on April 26, 2025, during a traffic stop along Interstate 20 near Exit 194. Deputies attempted to serve a temporary protective order to James Blake Montgomery, 38, who initially appeared cooperative but then opened fire with a fully automatic 9mm AR pistol. Sikes was struck and killed during the gunfire. Deputy Gavin White was critically injured. The suspect fled in an RV, crashed, and was later found dead inside. Bomb-making materials, firearms, and pipe bombs were discovered in the vehicle. The shooting is under investigation.

On April 25, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Officer Sam Lively of the Tyler Police Department was traveling southbound on Troup Highway on his motorcycle. As he approached the intersection with East Southeast Loop 323, another vehicle traveling in the inside lane changed lanes into the outside lane, striking Officer Lively's motorcycle. The collision caused Officer Lively to be ejected from his motorcycle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Officer Lively had recently graduated from the police academy and had been sworn into the department for five months. An autopsy was ordered, and a memorial escort was held for the officer as he was transferred to a Lindale funeral home. ​

On April 23, 2025, deputies from the Clark County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an occupied residential burglary in the 9000 block of NE 79th Street in Vancouver, Washington. The caller reported a male subject inside the residence, who then fled the scene on foot.​

During a search of the area, law enforcement officers discovered a vehicle nearby with a deceased individual inside, matching the description of the suspect. The individual was identified as Charles “Rob” Gardiner, the Interim Chief of the Cowlitz Tribal Public Safety Department. Evidence suggests that Gardiner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit is actively investigating the incident, including the circumstances surrounding Gardiner's presence at the residence.​

On April 22, 2025, around 12:30 p.m., Dawson County Sheriff's Deputy Jessie Perez, 42, was conducting a traffic stop on West U.S. Highway 180 near North Avenue V in Lamesa, Texas. During the stop, a passing commercial vehicle threw debris that struck Perez. He was transported to Lamesa Medical Arts Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. Perez had been with the department for eight months and also served as a city council member in O'Donnell and as a firefighter and EMS member. The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

On 04/20/2025, Christifer DeBus led police on a multi-county chase after police identified him as a homicide suspect in the killing of Jeremiah Lothamer. Officers from multiple agencies joined the pursuit as it continued into Columbia City. Indiana State Police used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle. Police said DeBus fired shots after the vehicle stopped and officers from several agencies opened fire. Authorities later determined DeBus died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In May 2026, the Whitley County Coroner’s Office officially ruled the manner of death a suicide.

On April 15, 2025, Lieutenant Helio Garcia of the South Fulton Police Department was killed in a head-on collision while on duty. Garcia was driving his patrol vehicle eastbound on Flat Shoals Road near Connell Road when his vehicle was hit head on by a car. Garcia was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and died.
